When I scan a slightly “thin” and underexposed colour negative in 42 bit colour or 14 bit greyscale I find the resultant scan to be very contrasty and lacking highlight and shadow detail. I know the detail is there because the negative produces a very reasonable looking print when processed at the local developers. However when I scan it as a monochrome negative (as opposed to a colour negative)it produces a well balanced image with subtle highlight and shadow detail comparable to the print. Unfortunately the dust removal does not work in this mode and anyway I would like to keep the image in 42bit colour. Does anyone have any comments/explanations/ answers to this?
